Low Frequency:

Uses: access control doors commonly found in office buildings

my low frequency & high frequency nfc reader

High frequency:

Uses: nentendo action figures, bus passes, event tickets, perimeter security systems, and way more!

Anyways here's my recommendations for devices to buy

Readers only:

PROS:

reads Low and high frequency! acts as a usb keyboard, and can be used with android phones!

CONS: is only a reader :( so no writing low frequncy

I own this one. can vouch for it.

Adafruit PN532 NFC/RFID Shield for Arduino

NOTE! really important! this only supports NFC! dont buy it for low frequncy!

PROS: its from adafuit! anything from Adafruit has great community support great docs and exmaple code

CONS: only supports NFC, and is around $40's as of writing

I don't own this one, but can vouch for Adafruit products and can say with confidence that you will not be disappointed.

THE CHEEP OPTION! (assuming you already have 1 arduino)

RC522 RFID Reader Module (amazon like $3-$6 bucks USD)

Pros:  its cheap! and often comes with a few extras. great to get hacking or put into a project for not much coin.

Cons: its cheap. It only does high frequency! most of the ones on this list only do high frequency :(

Pros: does both write/read low and high frequency! you pay for what you get for..

Cons: cost, complicated well its open source...

Free Option:

Modern android phone!

Most modern android phones have nfc built in!

PROS:
free, as in free beer!

did i mention it was free?

CONS: does suport low frequncy :(,

can get really low level! and write actual custom data! fun for basic hacking

Takeaway's:


A) If your on a budget go with the RC522 RFID or a free android phone

B) If you have money to blow, get a proxmark

C) If you only need to read, the dangerous things reader is a great cheapish option, and its good quality and support anything that supports usb keyboards!
